Coptic Orthodox Christians are the indigenous people of Egypt, who can trace their heritage back to the time of the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. Today they form just 10 per cent of the country’s population, but are the largest Christian community in the Middle East.
They have been a persecuted religious minority for centuries, and their peaceful response in the wake of constant tragedy has seen them nominated for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize.
