Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Metropolitan of Kiev Epiphanius I, met in Istanbul on Saturday with the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I, leader of Orthodox Christianity's principal body, to receive the decree of autocephaly that will grant independence to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Bartholomew I, the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodoxy, recognised the independence of the breakaway church from the Russian Orthodox Church on October 11.

The Holy Synod, the highest governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church, cut ties with the Constantinople Patriarchate, after it recognised the new self-governing, or autocephalous Ukrainian Church.
